One Tree Hill Fans with Benefit
Monday, January 30, 2006 This post is from Becky at Fanforum: ANNOUNCEMENT“One Tree Hill Fans With Benefit” Fundraising ProjectInitial Planning Committee – Volunteers NeededHi everyone, For those who don’t know me, my name is Becky and I will be coordinating our project to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). It is our hope that this project, along with our planned letter writing campaign and street team efforts, will keep our favorite show on the air next season and for many seasons to come. In addition to saving our show, this fundraising campaign also gives us the opportunity to really make a difference and support a cause that affects all of our lives. Chances are you know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. If not, odds are that you will at some point in the future. Current statistics show that 1 out of 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. In fact a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 2 minutes. (source: www.nationalbreastcancer.org) These are alarming statistics and I think we can all agree that if we have the opportunity to improve these odds even a fraction through our fundraising campaign, our efforts and sacrifice will be worth it. Our campaign will mirror the show's own efforts to raise awareness and money for this cause with the release of the 2nd One Tree Hill Soundtrack, "Friends with Benefit" on February 7th. This date is right around the corner and we want to launch our own project as close to this day as possible, so its time to start the first phase of this campaign, which is the formation of a planning committee.I realize that we're all eager to help with this cause and I guarantee that everyone who wants to help will get a chance in some capacity before all is said and done, BUT I want you to ask yourself a few questions before submitting your name for consideration as a volunteer for the initial planning committee. Do I truly have time to commit to this project? I know that most of us are either full-time students, full-time mom's or full-time employees and, as a result, our lives are busy. While being a part of this committee isn't a long-term commitment, it may require a fair amount of time in the short term. Once I get the necessary information from the NBCF to get started, we will roll on this project and roll quickly. So please only volunteer for the initial planning committee if you are able to truly commit your time to it. Am I a team player? I will be the main point of contact with our representative from the NBCF, but this is a team effort. We will be sharing and discussing ideas throughout this process and making decisions as a team or, in some cases, as a sub-committee of the team. At times, we will bring choices to the board for all to vote on. In this effort, we are not NH shippers, BL shippers or LP shippers. We are not FanForum posters, WB posters, Fanbolt posters or OTH911 posters…we are One Tree Hill fans working together towards a common goal…to get our favorite show renewed and to show our support for the very worthy cause of breast cancer research. Anyone who volunteers for this project should have an open mind and be willing and able to compromise when necessary. That is the only way that we will accomplish our tasks and be successful in this endeavor. What value can I bring to the initial planning committee? Let me state this first and foremost: Each and every OTH fan is an important member of our team effort to raise awareness and money for this cause, but for this initial planning committee we will most likely need volunteers with specific skill sets. Until I speak to the representative at the NBCF, I won't know specifically what they can do for us versus what we will need to set up on our own behalf, but my initial thoughts are that we will need volunteers on our planning team with at least one of the following skills/backgrounds: o Web design/web publishing expertise - Please forward a link to your website when you send your PM or email.o Fundraising experience - at all levels. Perhaps you helped to organize a fundraiser for your high school class or college sorority. Maybe you work for a non-profit organization. If so, we would welcome your expertise on the committee. o Communications or Marketing background. We'll want to get the word out to media outlets at some point…online, print, broadcast…let's think big here. Anyone with experience writing press releases, for example, would be a great asset to the team. Anyone studying marketing or communications or who has experience working in these fields or in the entertainment industry would be a welcome addition to the team. If you don't have these backgrounds but have excellent written communication skills, please consider volunteering for this effort.o Familiarity with MySpace group building and management.o Experience setting up and/or managing online auctions/sales at Ebay If you don’t have any of the skills listed above, but feel that you have expertise in another area that would be valuable to our effort, please contact me with that information. The list above is only a starting point. I encourage everyone who truly has a desire to be a part of this planning committee to volunteer, but when you do, please be prepared to tell me what you will be bringing to the table. And remember that this committee is only phase 1 of our project. The most important part of this effort…getting the word out to your friends, family, schools and community…is the key to our success and that’s where we’ll need EVERYONE’S help.Finally, whether or not you're part of the official planning committee, we are always in need of ideas on how to raise awareness for our cause. I've already received some great ideas from fans, and since we want to raise as much money and garner as much attention as possible, I hope that all of you will contribute any ideas you have as well. No idea is "stupid" or unimportant. While I can't promise that we will use all of the suggestions we receive, I will promise that all will be reviewed and considered equally.
